It's a Food Revolution

I'm amazed, shocked and saddened at the same time...

I've become addicted to ABC's Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Jamie Oliver is a chef from the United Kingdom who has revolutionized the way teenagers think about food. He's educated hundreds, if not thousands, of children in the UK about the proper foods to eat and how to cook them.

After a recent study, Huntington, WV, was called the unhealthiest city in America. Jamie Oliver decided enough was enough and he was going to do something about the obesity problem that America is facing - specifically Huntington. Aside from being a chef and TV personality, Jamie has to be one of the nicest and most sincere people I've ever seen on TV. I honestly believe everything he says and does is from the heart.

Jamie arrived in Huntington for about 3 months and completely changed, revolutionized, the way that town thought about eating and their health. He started with the elementary school, then with the high school and went out to the community - Marshall University, TV and the radio stations - to get everyone involved. This show on ABC isn't about Jamie Oliver and how he's come to America to produce another show. No. Jamie has proven that this show is about this town and what's happening all across America - we're all unhealthy, eating from over processed foods. The smallest changes can make all the difference and that's what Jamie is here to do.

As I write this, Episode 104 has ended and there are only 2 more episodes on ABC to air. I pray that this show doesn't stop in Huntington but that it continues to Texas, California, Florida, Chicago, Washington, DC and beyond. We have a problem in America and it started in our schools long ago, and it needs to end in our schools and everywhere else. Having mashed potatoes or french fries, Salisbury steak and peaches isn't a balanced diet.Where are the vegetables! Hamburgers, tater tots, pineapple and a cookie for lunch ... again, where are the vegetables!

A very interesting and yet disturbing truth unravels on the "Food Revolution" message boards. What are your kids eating at school? Join the discussion.

Take action!

Get cooking! It's fun, easy and a wonderful opportunity to spend with family and friends. I know we're all busy - too busy. But just stop for one second and think about what you're eating. Everything in moderation. There is nothing wrong with eating pizza, steak (grass fed), hamburgers (grass fed beef) - but not everyday!

Bite the bullet every now, and again and go without the pizza for lunch and instead have a traditional peanut butter and jelly, or turkey and cheese sandwich. Making a sandwich in the morning takes 5 minutes, if that. The money we spend each day to eat out - breakfast, lunch and dinner - is enough money to spend at the local grocery store and buy produce and meats to last the week. Just try it and see what happens.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution airs Fridays at 9 PM on ABC.

Spread the word and start making changes today.
